The First Sun, c. 1979

Painted at age four

I am Hanna Malang, a figurative painter born in Wrocław, Poland, in 1975 and now based in Germany. I use saturated, Fauvist colour and altered spatial relationships to explore how perception, memory and emotion shape the reality we experience. Human figures remain central to my work, although animals, cities and natural environments also become carriers of psychological meaning.
Painting has been part of my life since early childhood. The work reproduced here, made when I was four, is one of my earliest surviving paintings. In its intense blue sky, yellow sun and vividly coloured ground, I recognise an instinct that continues to guide me: to use colour not only to describe the world, but to transform it.
My desire to understand whether reality is truly as we perceive it also led me towards science. I studied electronics and later earned a PhD in physics at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. An early fascination with astronomy and the scale of the universe continues to influence my visual imagination and my interest in unstable or contradictory realities.
After years of working in technology and research while continuing to paint, I decided to place art at the centre of my professional practice. Since 2025, I have been developing my work through the Mastery Program at Milan Art Institute. My practice brings analytical curiosity and intuitive painting together, creating spaces in which external reality and inner experience continually reshape one another.
